Goal Setting That Makes a Difference

Among the lessons available to entrepreneurs through learning within the We Love Sales community, how to establish goals is perhaps one of the most effective. After all, progressing one’s own business venture requires vision, from which the steps to attain it must emerge, thus the necessity for clear objectives.

High achievers, including those within the community at We Love Sales, have long understood the impact of SMART goals, the key components that make goal attainment a reality.

The S in this clever acronym stands for specific. Any objective we have should be detailed so that we know exactly what we want to achieve. For instance, rather than say we want to increase profits as a general goal, we would say we want to see a 15 percent increase from last year’s earnings. This brings us to the M, which is measurable, such as ensuring we assign a number to our objective, so we can track how we’re doing, adjust strategies as needed, and realise concrete results.

Attainable is represented by the letter A, as in to achieve our mission, the objectives we establish must be realistic, albeit aggressive. Relevancy is the R in SMART, which reflects the importance of the goal to our overall vision. Finally, T is for timely, which means we should set deadlines so that we stay on course.
